Details and Development
Engine: Unity
Platform: Gear VR
Team Size: 6
My Roles: Programmer, Game Designer
Goal: To create a funny, memorable, multiplayer Gear VR party game intuitive enough so that players could easily pick it up during Toronto’s Level Up Student Showcase.
Development Process: Working with VR was completely new to everyone and with this came its own set of challenges - hardware and technical limitations, unique level design challenges within the VR space, and networking complications just to name a few. We didn’t know what would work and what wouldn’t, which made development all the more exciting. In order to stay on track for our Level Up Showcase goal, we made sure to hit our set of milestones:
Prototype - testing if our main game mechanic worked. Playtesting. Alpha - core game loop done, most assets in. Playtesting. Beta - polishing, all assets in, audio added. Playtesting. Level Up!
Playtesting was crucial for us, since there are many people who haven’t been exposed to VR before. We wanted to make sure the game was intuitive and accessible for everyone.
